Before Choosing Your Hemorrhoids Treatment

Before considering your hemorrhoids treatment options it is best to understand the disease better and to know helpful information about this condition.

Hemorrhoids  or ‘piles’ arise from the normal anatomy of the rectum and anal canal. It is a condition where blood vessels in and round the anus swell, become painful and bleed. This occurs when pressure is exerted in the superficial veins in the anus which can result to insufficient venous return.

Hemorrhoids can affect both sexes with the incidence usually highest in those aged 20-50 years old. It is a common problem and it has been reported that 4.4% of the population in the United States experience this condition at some stage in their lives. The incidence of hemorrhoids increases with age. About half of the people over 50 years of age will experience it to some degree and will seek hemorrhoids treatment from their doctors.

This may be a sensitive and extremely personal and private therefore a very good communication approach must be exercised by the doctor using effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills.  When gathering information a sensitive and respectful approach must be used.

A physical examination is normally needed to be done in order for the doctor to make a proper diagnosis which will help in determining the right hemorrhoids treatment to be used. Respecting the patient’s dignity and protecting their modesty must be done during the examination. The opportunity to have a chaperon during the examination must be offered to the patient.

Classification of Hemorrrhoids:

Grade 1. The patient may complain of bleeding. These are inside the anal canal and do not prolapse outside the anus.
Grade 2. The patient may experience rectal bleeding or the sensation of hemorrhoids descending . The hemorrhoids become visible outside the anus when straining or passing bowel motion, but they spontaneously are reduced back into the anus.
Grade 3. The patient may complain of rectal bleeding, a sensation of prolapsing hemorrhoids, and the tissue becomes inflamed if it is not reduced. The prolapse happen on straining and needs a manual reduction. This manual reduction can be done by pushing the hemorrhoids with the finger back inside the anus.
Grade 4. The patient may complain of rectal bleeding , pain and discomfort if the hemorrhoids are inflamed or strangulated. These hemorrhoids can not be pushed back inside the anus. They remain outside of the anal canal and can become thrombosed and strangulated.

Hemorrhoids can also be classified as Internal or External:

Internal Hemorrhoids.
-The person may experience bleeding but it is unusual for the internal hemorrhoids to cause pain.
-The hemorrhoids are covered by mucous membrane and remain inside the canal, originating from the internal hemorrhoidal venous plexus.
-This can be Grade 1 or 2.

External Hemorrhoids.
-These are covered by skin protruding from the rectum and rarely cause bleeding.
-They prolapse, descend, protrude outside the anal verge, and they are covered by skin.
-This can be Grade 2, 3, 4.

Strangulated Hemorrhoids.
-These prolapse and constrict blood flow from the anal sphincter.

Thrombosed Hemorrhoids.
-These are external hemorrhoids and full of clotted blood.

It is important to note that the symptoms associated with hemorrhoids like itching, pain, bleeding and inflammation of the anal area are likely to be experienced by all sufferers.
